First Year Orientation and Elections!

Audite, novi discipuli! Listen up first years!

CLASSU is pleased to announce its second annual First Year Orientation event! We will be meeting at the Heavy Metal Northrop Frye statue outside Northrop Frye Hall at Victoria College on Friday, 9 September at 10:30 a.m.

This gives any first years, or other students new to CLASSU, an opportunity to meet the Senate, get an orientation of buildings that the Department of Classics uses, and ask questions about UofT more generally. We will also show everyone the Lillian Massey Building, home to the Department of Classics and our very own CLASSU lounge, and have a chance to meet Professor Keith, the Chair, and Professor Lytle, the Undergraduate Co-ordinator.

As for the CLASSU Elections, nominations forms are now available! Check out our Elections page for details. The election will be in the CLASSU Lounge, LI 009 on Thursday 22 Sept. at 5:30p.m.!

Welcome First Years!

Hello first years!

Welcome to UofT. It’s going to be a crazy, tiring, busy, but great time. We at the Classics Students’ Union (CLASSU) are here to help give you any information about Classics at the University or other general tips. We will be holding a First Year Orientation session in early September in addition to being at the UTSU Street Festival on Wed. 7 Sept. during Orientation Week. Once we have the time and date finalized, we will be sending out information, so please send us an email letting us know you’re interested and we’ll make sure to contact you.

We will be running a variety of events from games days and movie nights to academic seminars. We also host an undergraduate conference and publish a journal, Plebeian. All of our events have free food, and sometimes even cake! We also have copies of syllabi and midterms to help you get a sense of what classes might be like in addition to our Anti-Calendar (course feedback survey results and helpful information about life as a Classicist at UofT). We are also looking for anyone with fresh ideas to come and join us, as there are at least six positions on our Senate available in the fall. More details on elections will follow.

If you have any questions, please send us an email at classicsstudentsunion@gmail.com. We look forward to meeting you!

Elections and Referendum Results

April Fools’ Day aside, there was a referendum which passed last week. You can see our new constitution here on the About page. There is also a new executive, which takes office tomorrow:

President: Willem Crispin-Frei
Vice-President: Sam Mazzilli
Executives: Elizabeth Colonna, Toby Keymer, and Hadley Staite

The Summer Senate’s main job this summer is to prep the new Anti-Calendar Pilot Project for publication and get ready for the promotion in the first couple of weeks of classes in the fall. We will then be having elections in September to fill the remaining six positions.

Stay tuned for more info from the Summer Senate!

STARKSSU is here, never fear!

Thanks to everyone who came out to the Spring Spectacular tonight. Our referendum passed, the journal was launched, cake was eaten, and your new Summer Senate was elected: President: Willem Crispin-Frei; Vice-President: Sam Mazzilli; Executives: Elizabeth Colonna, Toby Keymer, and Hadley Staite.

But then His Editorialness, T.R. Stark realized he could not leave his legacy to such inexperienced fools. Hence, at a special emergency assembly twenty minutes ago, CLASSU has become STARKSSU so that it’s Award-winning track record may continue in perpetuity.
